Muckraking

Having read excerpts from Sinclair's The Jungle, you should have an idea about the following (answer in bullet form):

Who wrote about the realities of the U.S.?
For what purpose did Muckrakers write?
What were the subjects of their investigations and writings?

Read this excerpt from Lincoln Steffens' "The Shame of the Cities".

Answer the following questions based on the excerpt:

What social and political ills does he mention?
How does he describe these ills?
What is Steffens' overall conclusion regarding society? Politics?
Compare "The Shame of the Cities" with "The Jungle".
