Evolution of the Revolution

Olive Branch Petition: Read the document and answer the questions at the end. Consider the date and what is says about colonial sentiment towards Britain.

1.) I think the Second Continental Congress adopted this tone in order to tell the King how serious they were trying to be without upsetting him and Parliament. If they didn't include specific, respectful terms in the document it may have caused more harm than needed.

2.) People who were already in favor of independence were most likely in support of what was written. It simply stated why the colonies were upset and what they wanted to acheive after they received their independence. Some people may have had other ideas in order to achieve their independence but at least this was a start.

3.) Paine responded to this type of petition in Common Sense in a different approach. Paine wanted to completely break ties with Britain's politics while the Olive Branch Petition wanted to consider the colonists "loyal" to their Mother Country.
